A MEMO FROM JOHN KUHNER REGARDING 2013 All-Eastern and All-State Eligibility:
Since our CMEA All-State and All-Eastern is a combined event in 2013, CT students who are selected and commit to participating in an All-EasternHonors Ensemble will choose to have the All-Eastern as their "All-State" type ensemble experience for that year. There is an overlap in the schedule on Thursday which prevents students from being able to do both All-State and All-Eastern. In the past we found that less than 50% of CT All-Eastern students decided to participate in both All-State and All-Eastern when they had the opportunity to do so. This was due to financial concerns and amount of time out of school, college auditions, etc. The benefit of combining these events is that member directors only need to miss 3 days in a row (Wed-Fri) instead of 2 days (Thur-Fri) on two different weeks, hopefully, allowing more folks to be able to attend the conference. The last time we hosted All-East and a separate
stand alone All-State in 2007, several folks complained that they could not go to the conference because they did not have kids in All-East and therefore could only get out for All-State where there was no PD offered. The total number of students from CT that this will effect is approx 60 out of 450+ All-State participants in 2013. There are also positives in cost savings by combing these events which will be passed on to the All-State student in the form of reduced fee. And the All-State Concert is a great way to kick off the ED Conference with a Connecticut Night, showcasing our best hs students on Thur night. Also, All-State students will still have the same amount of rehearsal time, and missed school time as they do now since we will start rehearsals after school on Tuesday and end on Thursday night.
